2005 Hautes Cotes De Beaune Clos Magistere By Jean Jacques Girard

At first taste, without decanting (needed a wine for dinner in a rush so we just grabbed this one from our testing collection for the week), this red seemed to be a typically thin-bodied, perfectly fine, but uninteresting wine, but nonetheless a bargain at less than €10 in most shops.  After about an hour, it began to get silkier and develop more character….so far so good…. It was corked and saved for the next day.

The next day at lunch I had a bit of roast beef fresh from the market in Chagny and poured a glass of J.J. Girard’s Hautes-Cotes De Beaune 2005….Wow.  A little bit of air and a day of rest produced a completely different wine from the previous evening.  This wine was smooth and remarkably sophisticated in its flavor layers and mouthfeel. More strongly flavored than the previous inexpensive wines we had been trying from Givry, Mercury and other nearby neighborhoods, this wine from Savigny-Beaune was delicious and heartwarming.  Excellent value and a great find!  It seems the folks over at FiveReasonsWine.co.Uk liked its value too.
