Pernand-Vergelesses (Domaine Doudet - Savigny) 2005

Pernand-Vergelesses (Domaine Doudet fom Savigny) 2005

Both the Ferrey Montangerand (Givry) and the Pernand-Vergelesses by Domaine Doudet (Savigny-Les-Beaune) are remarkable bargains in the under-€10 catgegory, demonstrating the ability of the Burgundy winemakers to produce stunningly delicious and multi-layered wines at friendly prices.  Both these wines impressed us with the depth of character and subtle flavorings usually found in much more expensive wines.  While each had very distinctive personalities, they had the same degree of wild red berry fruit introduction that lingered and changed into silky mineral notes as they flowed in and around the mouth.  Rounded, smooth and full of character without being forceful or overbearing. Surprisingly elegant at this price. Wow.

The Pernand-Vergelesses village area sits right next to Savigny near Beaune and contains some Grand Cru appelations (Corton-Charlemagne). These wines are reported to age well for pinot-based reds.  Bergman’s Bourgogne website has some great links to domaines of this little valley.  According to Bergman, Pernand-Vergelesses is the only commune in the Cote d”Or to offer both reds and whites at all four levels (grand cru, premier cru, village and regional) and contains about 17.26 hectares of grand cru vineyards.

Domaine Doudet is said to perhaps be the last completely independent, family-operated company in the Cote d’Or region (Savigny-les-Beaune).  Their vines amount to about 12 hectares in 5 different villages. The grapes are said to be hand-picked and yields kept low to optimize the fruit quality, although some are outsourced from other vineyards under strict quality reviews.  No chemicals are used on these vineyards.  Doudet’s wines are bottled unfiltered, with the whites being aged in oak for 9-20 months and the reds aged in oak from 15-21 months. The Doudet Naudin website has some nice photos.

Domaine Ferrey Montangerand, run by Robert Ferrey and Yves Montangerand is located in the village of Sules, in the Cote Challonnaise (south of Beaune) and makes a wide variety of wines as appelation Mercurey and Givry. Their domaine is also small at 16 hectares, family operated and produces cremant de Bourgogne, Bourgogne Blanc, Rouge and an Aligote-based white.  Great wines at great prices.
